Converting MP3 to WAV cannot restore what compression removed — nothing can. What it does give you is the decoded audio as clean 16-bit PCM with no further loss: the right input for audio editors, samplers and anything that asks for WAV, and the safest starting point if the file will be edited again. Decode happens on your device, usually in a second.
Reasons to decode to WAV
- Hand an MP3 to an editor, DAW or app that only accepts WAV.
- Stop generation loss: edit in WAV, compress back to MP3 once at the end.
- Archive a decoded copy alongside the original before further edits.
How to use the MP3 to WAV Converter
-
Drop your MP3
Drag an .mp3 file onto the page or click to browse. Other compressed formats decode the same way.
-
Keep WAV selected
The export format is fixed to lossless WAV — 16-bit PCM at the file’s original sample rate.
-
Convert and download
Click Convert to WAV. The decoded audio is written locally and downloads immediately.
MP3 to WAV does not restore what MP3 threw away
The page decodes the MP3 into 16-bit PCM WAV. Editors and DAWs that refuse MP3 can open that WAV. The missing highs from the original encode do not come back.
Use it when the next step must not add another MP3 generation: cut, fade, or mix the WAV, then encode once at the end.
When the conversion is worth it
The format menu exports WAV only. It is the right move in a few concrete cases:
- A program or hardware recorder that only accepts WAV.
- An edit you will encode once later, so you do not stack MP3 on MP3.
- A handoff to someone who asked for PCM, not a smaller MP3.
Size and the other direction
The WAV is much larger than the MP3. That size is the uncompressed PCM, not new detail.
Going the other way, WAV to MP3, is a different page, and it chooses a bitrate. Making an MP3 smaller without changing it to WAV is the audio compressor.
MP3 to WAV Converter FAQ
Does converting MP3 to WAV improve the quality?
No — and be skeptical of any converter claiming otherwise. The data the encoder discarded is gone. WAV gives you exactly what the MP3 decodes to, which is why it is the right format for further editing: it never adds another lossy generation.
Why convert to WAV at all, then?
Editing and archiving. WAV is the format audio editors, samplers and CD-burning tools expect, and a lossless master avoids stacking compression artifacts every time you process the file. The honest workflow: decode to WAV, edit, export to MP3 once at the end.
Which MP3 bitrate works best?
All of them — decoding is exact for any valid MP3, from 64 to 320 kbps. The WAV will simply contain whatever the MP3 actually holds, at its original sample rate.
How big will the WAV be?
Roughly ten times the MP3. A three-minute song at 44.1 kHz stereo becomes about 30 MB as 16-bit PCM — that is the size of uncompressed audio, not a converter inefficiency.
Is my MP3 uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is decoded in your browser and written to WAV locally. Nothing leaves your device.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Pick the file and the conversion stays in the tab. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on iPhone and Android decode the usual formats. A long file uses more memory, so a desktop is steadier past roughly an hour.
